Bribe-Seeking Policeman Accused Of Assaulting, handling Female Ondo University Student

According to Ms. Adekunle, the officer attacked her for spurning his demands for a bribe, adding that Mr. Ibrahim was irate that she had recently told him she was opposed to bribery.

A Nigerian police officer identified as Corporal Yusuf Ibrahim has been accused of assaulting and molesting Omoromoke Comfort Adekunle, a final year female student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State.

Ms. Adekunle alleged that Corporal Ibrahim, whose police number is 364909, attacked her at a security checkpoint in Ago-yeye community along Owo/Akungba road. Several students who spoke to our correspondent described the police officer as a notorious extorter who is assigned to the ‘A Division’ of the Owo Divisional Police in Ondo State.

According to Ms. Adekunle, the officer attacked her for spurning his demands for a bribe, adding that Mr. Ibrahim was irate that she had recently told him she was opposed to bribery.

Ms. Adekunle, who suffered severe bodily injury in the assault, described her ordeal in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

In the statement, the final year student explained that she was in a vehicle headed for Akungba to submit her academic project at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) when Mr. Ibrahim ordered the vehicle to stop at a checkpoint at Ago-yeye on the Owo/Akunga road.

She said Corporal Ibrahim demanded that the driver pay a N50 bribe. She wrote that the driver, who did not have a N50 note, gave the police officer N500, expecting to receive change of N450. Instead, “the police officer went away with the money for more than five minutes without returning the change,” Ms. Adekunle wrote.

According to her, the police officer’s action infuriated the passengers who were losing patience with his behavior. She wrote that she and other passengers “became impatient with the policeman and even the driver for giving [a] bribe and wasting [their] time,” adding that rain was about to fall and she was anxious to get to the university to submit her academic assignment.

Ms. Adekunle stated that the driver went to the police officer to ask for change of N450. Instead of giving the change, Mr. Ibrahim walked to the vehicle and began rebuking and threatening passengers for criticizing him as a police officer.

According to Ms. Adekunle, as the passengers did not utter a word to him, the furious officer pointed to her “and asked if I was deaf or dumb because he was talking to us and we were not responding.” She said the officer hurled abuses at her and accused her of being a prostitute.

She added that the unruly officer at one point opened the front door of the vehicle, dragged her out, and punched her on her neck and mouth, causing her to bleed heavily from the nose.

Ms. Adekunle stated that the officer tore her blue and white-striped gown and, in the presence of other passengers, began to handle her breasts and to lewdly touch other parts of her body in the guise of searching her. She said her fellow passengers cried for help as she underwent her ordeal at the hands of Mr. Ibrahim.

She stated that Corporal Ibrahim seized her iPhone 7, which rang as he touched her, adding that, when she demanded for the phone, the officer pulled his gun and threatened to shoot her as well as the driver who was pleading with him to stop the molestation.

Ms. Adekunle’s statement said the officer “even threatened to burn our vehicle (bus) into ashes and that nothing would happen,” adding that the officer was eventually pacified by another transporter who pleaded with Mr. Ibrahim “to drop his gun to avoid killing us like animals.”

She said the officer threatened to spray teargas on her, and then punched her on the chest and neck.

“I fainted in the process but I was later revived by other passengers some minutes after,” wrote the student. “My mouth was full of blood and I was taken to a hospital where I received treatment and [got] placed on drugs due to the heavy attack,” she further recounted.

Our correspondent learnt that Ms. Adekunle’s lawyer has already petitioned the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, over her harrowing experience that caused her physical and emotional injury.

The victim’s lawyer, Charles Titiloye, urged the Commissioner of Police to investigate the assault and to prosecute the accused police officer. Speaking to our correspondent, Mr. Titiloye said the randy police officer was apparently drunk when he assaulted his client.

He stated that the officer’s punch on Ms. Adekunle chest had left the student “terribly weak and in pain,” adding that the assaulted student continued to receive treatment and was put on drugs after being discharged from the hospital.

“Her health has since deteriorated as a result of the incident, so we are urging the Police Commissioner in Ondo State to fully investigate this incident and prosecute the said officer for the assault on our client,” Mr. Titiloye said.

A source at the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that the office of the Commissioner of Police had received the petition submitted by Ms. Adekunle’s lawyer. He added that Corporal Ibrahim had been summoned to appear at the Akure headquarters of the police command for interrogation.

“I’m sure the commissioner will be having a meeting with the lawyer and the two parties involved in this case sometime this week,” the source said.

Academic activities were paralysed on Wednesday at the University of Ibadan (UI) as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced its one week warning strike.
The strike forced most students to stay indoors at their halls of residence, as the strike monitoring committee put in place by the union led by the Chairman of the ASUU in the Branch, Dr Deji Omole monitored development.
Omole, who moved round the faculties to monitor compliance, described the strike as successful and urged members to continue to defend their interests.
“The congress of ASUU, UI branch, at its meeting of April 4, received permission from the national body of the union, declaring one week warning strike beginning from Wednesday, April 5 to Tuesday, April 11,” he said.
He said the warning strike was to compel the university administration to address pending welfare matters affecting the members.
He identified some of the issues to include, shortfall and fractional payment of salary of members, illegal pension deductions, non-payment of postgraduate supervision allowance and non-payment of promotion arrears.
“During the strike period our members are not to be involved in teaching, supervision, or attend to statutory and ad hoc meetings,” Omole said.
He advised members to remain resolute and await further directives from the leadership of the union at the branch level.

Meningitis: God’s Punishment For Fornication - Yari, Zamfara Governor Says

The Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, on Tuesday attributed the renewed outbreak of meningitis which has claimed hundreds of lives in parts of the country to flagrant disobedience to God.

Specifically, he said fornication was the main reason God was punishing Nigeria with meningitis.

He added that God decided to send Type C of the disease which has no vaccine as punishment for Nigerians’ nefarious activities .

Yari said this in an interview he granted in Hausa shortly after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa , Abuja .

The governor specifically named fornication as one of the sins which may have made God to inflict the country with the disease.

He said , “ What we used to know as far as meningitis is concerned is the Type A virus.

“ The World Health Organisation has carried out vaccinations against this Type A virus , not just in Zamfara , but in many other states .

“ However , because people refused to stop their nefarious activities, God now decided to send Type C virus , which has no vaccination.

“ People have turned away from God and he has promised that ‘ if you do anyhow, you see anyhow. ’ That is just the cause of this outbreak , as far as I am concerned.

“ There is no way fornication will be so rampant and God will not send a disease that cannot be cured . ”

The governor expressed the belief that the epidemic will end once Nigerians decide to repent from their sinful way of life.

“ The most important thing is for our people to know that their relationship with God is not smooth . All they need to do is repent and everything will be alright , ” he explained .

He said political leaders were doing their best in educating the people, but would not be able to go about arresting them if they failed to obey.

The governor said his administration was committed to addressing the outbreak , saying he summoned an emergency meeting when it started.

The meeting , according to him , was attended by state and local government officials as well as traditional rulers.

He said there is shortage of vaccine for the Type C with the five million doses available not enough for Zamfara State alone .

He said the Ministry of Health has only 50, 000 doses of the vaccine adding that 20, 000 was given to his state because of the high casualties recorded there .

“ Our focus as a state now is to continue treating those who are infected with the disease , but as for vaccination , it has an international dimension .

“ We have information that Nigeria will get the highest percentage of the five million doses available now.

“ Apart from WHO, other international bodies such as the Bill Gates foundation and UNICEF are also currently focusing on how to tackle the outbreak, ” he said .

Bag Of Rice To Sell For N10,000 by June - Aminu Goronyo

By Gabriel Ewepu ABUJA- RICE farmers under the auspices of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, has assured Nigerians that in June 2017 a 50 kilogramme of rice bag will sell at N10, 000. This assurance was given by the National President, RIFAN, Aminu Goronyo, while speaking on the current development in the rice industry, which Goronyo disclosed that rice farmers under the association now have direct access to fertiliser. He said: “Fertiliser was a very big challenge, but today it has become a history. We have signed MoU where the fertiliser is sold N5, 500 per bag of fertiliser, and is now a government policy.

We have more fertiliser in the country and go direct to the hands of the farmers and is everywhere in the country. “We have already achieved rice sufficiency in the last two years because all the rice we eat is grown here in the country.

With the government through the Nigeria Customs Service on the land borders, including the high exchange rate no importer can go to other countries and import rice for profit. I assure you in the next three months a 50kg bag of rice will come down to N10, 000. “The Anchor Borrowers Scheme was conceived through collective effort by the Central Bank of Nigeria, RIFAN and other relevant key stakeholders, and we are everyday meeting with the CBN reviewing the process.” However, the rice farmers’ boss lamented inadequate rice seeds for his over 4.2 million registered members, which according to him said past governments, have failed to provide certified and quality seeds for over 30 years. “Seed is the most essential component of any commodity that is going to be produced. We do not have rice seeds in Nigeria.

The few companies we have in the country do not have the capacity to supply the quality and certified seeds we need. What we have is grossly inadequate and not up to one percent of the need by Nigerian farmers. “I blame the previous governments because for the 30 years we don’t have enough certified seeds.

The government has played vital role in creating this problem for the farmers. “The research centres are there and they are being paid but they are not doing what they are supposed to because government rely on them to come up with certified seeds, and we the end users, the farmers, we know that we are not getting then real certified seed. “Even the current Anchor Borrowers Scheme that is going on we are just managing seeds from few companies that rarely have certified seeds.

Most of the seeds that are being supplied are from the companies that do not have all it takes, and we do not have other options than to use what they are giving to us. The seeds released are not up to five percent of our total requirement”, he stated.

17-Year-Old Boy Helps Polytechnic To Build Nigeria's First Locally-Made Drone

A polytechnic in Lagos has produced its first prototype of a drone. Lagos City authorities have said, if developed fully, the state could employ the drones for security surveillance.

A talented 17-year-old David Opateyibo heads up the development of a drone which authorities in Lagos hope to deploy for security surveillance. The drone, a high breed mix of existing drone components and locally fabricated material, seems to fly normally but David says there is a lot more room for improvement.

“Aside from using drones for aerial surveillance, you can also use them for aerial photography and videography, or for broadcasting, incidence control or pipeline and power line inspection. You can also use drones in agriculture, to analyze farm produce,” David said in an interview.

Biafra: Remove Itsekiri Land From Map To Avoid Civil War – Itsekiri Youths

The Itsekiri National Youth Congress, INYC, has called on the agitators for a sovereign state of Biafra to remove Itsekiri land from the map of the Biafra.

This was contained in a communiqué issued in Warri, Delta State by the President of the INYC, Esimaje Awani yesterday.

He warned that, “Itsekiri and its territories should not be included in any IPOB or Biafra plan.”

He stated that Itsekiri were an indigenous ethnic group of Nigeria’s Niger Delta region of Delta State presently resident in Warri South, Warri North and Warri South West Local Government Areas bordering the Atlantic Coast of Nigeria as their homeland with their only neighbours being the Bini to the North, the Ijaw to the South, the Urhobo to the East and the Yoruba of Ondo State to the Northwest.

According to Awani, from about 1490 – 1884, the Itsekiri had an independent political kingdom known as Warri Kingdom that was not subordinate to any of the World Powers in Europe or any African Kingdom.

He added that it was in 1894 when the Niger Coast Protectorate was established that it came under the protection of Her Britannic Majesty vide the Treaty of 1884.

He further explained that by another Treaty of 1894, the Itsekiri remained under the British until the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria was created and in 1914, without consultation with the Itsekiri people, Lord Lugard decreed Nigeria into existence and made Warri Kingdom (Itsekiri homeland) part of this enterprise.

Awani pointed out that by the map of the Republic of Biafra of May 1967, Edo and Delta states of Nigeria was never envisioned as a part of Biafra by the legendary Chukwuemeka Dim Ojukwu, saying that the current inclusion of present Delta State, including the Itsekiri National territories of Warri Kingdom without due consultation is preposterous, totally unacceptable and ultimately invalid.

His words,“IPOB and Biafra have their rights of agitation for freedom of self determination as enshrined in the United Nations declaration, but other minority ethnic groups not duly consulted and their approval secured should not be dragged along to avoid the mistake that led to the civil war.

“The magnanimity of Itsekiri in allowing Igbos celebrate the Igbo Cultural Day in our land should not be taken for granted as we urge IPOB to de-list Itsekiri territories and Warri areas from its proposed map.”

Drake's 'View' is the first album to hit 1 billion Apple Music streams

Drake's 'View' is the first album to hit 1 billion Apple Music streams

It can only mean one thing when that Hotline Bling -- more good news for Drake.

The Canadian rapper has become the first artist to have an album, in this case the April-released "Views", register over 1 billion streams. Earlier this week, he received a plaque from Apple CEO Tim Cook, iTunes boss Eddy Cue and Apple Music head of content Larry Jackson, as seen on his Instagram account.

It didn't just crawl over the mark, either. Jackson on Tuesday noted via tweet that the album was now up to 1.5 billion streams on Apple Music.

"Views" is something of a feather in Apple's cap, having secured 5 days of exclusivity on Apple Music back in April. The streaming service, which competes with Spotify and Tidal, will also host an exclusive "visual companion" to "Views", it was announced in a tweet.

The album isn't just a digital juggernaut, it's also topped the US' Billboard 200 charts for 13 non-consecutive weeks.

Nigerian Patriots, NP Political Movement Formed By Top-shots From PDP, APC - Politics

Ahead of 2019 general elections, a new political movement, the Nigerian Patriots, NP, has emerged.
The group, it was gathered, has an ultimate goal of becoming a mega-party that will contest for elective positions.

Those who have shown interest in the group, according to a Tribune report, include some former Nigerian leaders, vice presidents, former and serving state governors, senators and House of Representatives, as well as eminent politicians.

A number of chieftains of the All Progressive Congress, APC, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Labour Party, LP, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, are also reportedly part of the proposed party.

It was learnt that most of the leaders in the South-West, comprising former PDP governors and lawmakers who were uncomfortable with some prevailing situations in their parties, are also part of the group.

The steering committee of the proposed party is headed by a PDP bigwig, Chief Dosu Oladipo, who told Tribune that “Anybody that wants the survival of this country should come to the Nigerian Patriots. It is not a socio-cultural group; it is a political group.

“We are reaching out to all leaders across the six geopolitical zones. We have consolidated in the South-West; South-East, South-South; North-Central; North-East and the North-West.

“At the appropriate time, the Nigerian Patriots will apply for registration by INEC.”

The new group is hoping to capitalize on the fictionalization of the PDP and the cold war in the APC over supremacy in the National Assembly caucus, as well as rancour in a number of state chapters.

Speaking on the ongoing talks, Oladipo said the group boasts of members who strongly believed in restoring good governance by ending an era of impunity and ineptitude to the political space.

He disclosed that he and other leaders of the steering committee met in Ibadan, last Wednesday, in the ongoing moves to consolidate on the gains of the past few weeks of serious engagements and consultations.

Oladipo did not disclose when NP would apply for registration by INEC because of the need “to avoid some mistakes that characterized the formation of mega parties in the past.”

“You don’t do things in haste, when it comes to forming the kind of formidable national party we are involved.

“We are promoting the principle of inclusiveness and consultation.

“We are still reaching out to other like-minds across board and once they say, ‘oh, it is time to move to the next stage, we will gladly comply”, he added.

Why I’m Leaving Olamide’s YBNL – Chinko Ekun Opens Up

YBNL rapper, Oladipo Olamide Emmanuel popularly known as Chinko Ekun has confirmed his imminent exit from the label. Chinko Ekun grew up in Ikotun, Lagos state. He started his musical career professionally in 2011, as a rapper and later caught the attention of the YBNL Nation Boss, Olamide, who later signed him.

The label owner, Olamide skipped the rapper’s name in a recent interview while listing artistes who were going on the label tour.

This is coming a few weeks after Chinko complained that his education was stalling his music career seriously.

Reacting to this latest development, Chinko’s manager, Paul said he was omitted by Olamide because the rapper’s contract with YBNL will soon expire, adding that chances of renewing his contract was very slim.

Chinko’s name being excluded was due to his contract which is expiring soon, but Olamide did not let that out to the media,”

Adding that “It’s just something that has been brewing, everybody is just speculating about it. So for now, anything can happen, but as we speak there is nothing like renewing any contract.”

He also stated that schooling has indeed slowed Chinko Ekun down considerably, but added that irrespective of that, he tries to put out some songs when he is less busy.
